What to do When Labor Gets Intense?
How a doula can help!

When labor gets intense, you don't need to “tough it out.” You need support, tools, and someone who knows what to do next.
There comes a point in labor when everything can suddenly feel more intense.
Contractions are stronger. Talking becomes difficult. You may find yourself thinking:
“I don't know if I can do this.”
This is often the moment when having the right labor support can make a tremendous difference.
The good news? You don't have to figure it out alone.
What Can You Do When Labor Gets Intense?
When contractions become stronger, your goal isn't necessarily to make them stop. Instead, you can use different labor coping techniques to help your body work through each contraction.
1. Change Positions
Movement and position changes can help you find what feels most comfortable.
Try standing, swaying, leaning over a birth ball, getting on your hands and knees, sitting, or lying on your side.
There isn't one “perfect” labor position. The right position is the one that helps you feel supported and comfortable in that moment.
2. Use Your Breath
When a contraction becomes intense, it's easy to tense your entire body or hold your breath.
Slow, intentional breathing can give you something to focus on and help you stay present through the contraction.
Your birth support team can remind you to breathe when you're having trouble focusing on your own.
3. Try Counter-pressure
Hip squeezes, lower-back pressure, massage, and other hands-on comfort measures can be valuable tools during labor.
Your partner can learn these techniques ahead of time so they aren't trying to figure them out for the first time while you're having a contraction.
4. Keep Moving
Walking, swaying, rocking, changing positions, and using a birth ball can give you different options as labor progresses.
Sometimes what felt good an hour ago won't feel good anymore.
That's okay. Change it up.
5. Focus on One Contraction at a Time
When labor gets intense, thinking about how many contractions you have left can feel overwhelming.
Instead, focus on what's happening right now.
One contraction. One breath. One moment at a time.
Don't Wait Until Labor to Learn Your Options
One of the biggest benefits of childbirth preparation is having tools available before you need them.
You and your partner can practice labor positions, comfort techniques, breathing, movement, and ways to support each other before the intensity of labor begins.
And that's where a birth doula can be especially helpful.
What Does a Birth Doula Do During Intense Labor?
A doula provides continuous physical and emotional support throughout labor.
A doula may help you:
- Try different labor positions
- Use movement and comfort techniques
- Practice breathing and relaxation
- Provide counterpressure and massage
- Help your partner know what to do
- Remind you of the tools you've practiced
- Help you feel informed and supported as labor progresses
A doula isn't there to take over your birth.
They're there to help you feel confident in your ability to birth your baby.
