Fetal Ejection Reflex
Your body's Naturally engineered birth power - FER.
Birth is powerful, sacred, and—believe it or not—designed to work with you, not against you. One of the most amazing examples of that design is something called the Fetal Ejection Reflex, often shortened to FER.
If you have never heard of it, you are not alone. FER is one of the most natural, instinctive parts of birth, but it is rarely talked about. The DoulaFOURce has had the honor of supporting 2 mamas who experienced FER and it is the most magical thing to witness!
According to science, FER is a neuroendocrine reflex that helps women deliver their babies quickly & instinctively during transition when your cervix is completely dilated. This reflex is triggered by high levels of your stress hormones such as adrenaline and nor-epinephrine, which can be released when a mother feels save and supported. This reflex allows the uterus to contract forcefully, delivering the baby without the need for voluntary pushing.
FER can happen when these 5 things are put into place:
1. Create a calm, protected birth place.
This is not a performance that you feel the pressure to put on a show. This is something sacred that deserves as much reverence that you can give.
2. Choose supportive birth partners.
Having a birth doula present with your spouse does create a safe and supported environment.
3. Limit unnecessary vaginal exams & talking during contractions.
You do not want to spike your stress hormones - this will stall out your labor. Keep that oxytocin flowing.
4. Follow your instincts.
Your voice matters, so you should be able to move & rest on demand.
5. Trust your body.
Confidence reduces tension - and tension slows labor.
